Ottawa Auto Show: 2015 BMW X5

Published on March 19 2015

''Interior comforts and technological gadgets aren’t all the 2015 BMW X5 is about, however.''

The grandfather of SUV’s at BMW, the X5 was the first sport utility to grace the Bavarian manufacturer’s showrooms at the beginning of the millennium. You might call it the reason BMW does so well in the CUV and SUV segments. Of course, BMW doesn’t do anything “ordinary” and the X5 was branded an SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle), not just a SUV.

Since then, the BMW X5 has matured in both design and performance. Now in its third generation, the F15 model uses the same chassis as the outgoing model as well as the same engine choices, however, it’s in its dynamic exterior look and interior features that the X5 really progressed.

The new 2015 BMW X5 features a much more aerodynamic exterior design with large air inlets, an Air Curtain in the front bumper, and the Air Blade on the D-pillar improves airflow while also making the stylish SAV look wider. Flat and squat, the 2015 BMW X5 looks authoritative and modern.

That sophisticated and classy design continues inside the 2015 BMW X5 where you’ll find top-quality leather along with BMW’s new iDrive Touch Controller used with the freestanding Control Display.

Interior comforts and technological gadgets aren’t all the 2015 BMW X5 is about, however. As a “sport activity” vehicle, the X5 offers a sporty drive along with three engines that are available which allow the X5 range to offer something for everyone. There is even a diesel engine should fuel-economy be a top priority for you.

The 2015 BMW X5 xDrive35i comes equipped with an inline 6-cylinder engine that produces an even 300 horsepower and torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system. The X5 xDrive50i is the beast of the bunch with a TwinPower turbocharged 8-cylinder that pushes out 445 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

The most efficient of the lot is the xDrive35d which comes equipped with an inline 6-cylinder turbodiesel mill that produces 255 horsepower and a fantastic 413 lb-ft of torque. All engines are controlled via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Overall, the 2015 BMX X5 offers a dynamic drive and design that’s sure to please even the most discerning SUV (read: SAV) shopper. There’s a reason this particular model started it all for BMW SUVs.
