Options on the Table for Volkswagen TDI Vehicle Owners

Published on February 21 2017

After more than a year of waiting, Volkswagen TDI owners that have been affected by the German automakers Dieselgate scandal in Canada finally have something to go on. Last December, Volkswagen reached an agreement with Canadian consumers, which must now be accepted by the courts.

As we know, Volkswagen is accused of installing on some of its TDI diesel engine vehicles a software that allowed the vehicles in question to pass the antipollution tests of various countries when in fact the engines sometimes polluted up to 40 times the legal limit allowed.

Two Options for Volkswagen Diesel-Powered Vehicle Owners

The Volkswagen deal is valued at $ 2.1 billion and includes two separate components. The first portion is a compensation offered to every owner of Volkswagen’s affected 2.0-liter TDI engine produced between 2009 and 2015. The second portion of the agreement offers three options for consumers to keep or replace their TDI motor vehicle.

Initially, all Volkswagen TDI vehicle owners (including the Audi A3 TDI) will receive a compensation ranging from $5,100 to $8,000. It is important to remember that the agreement applies only to vehicles equipped with the 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder engine. Volkswagen has yet to reach an agreement with 3.0-liter V6 TDI owners.

The amounts of $5,100 to $8,000 are available whether you keep your TDI vehicle or not. Thereafter, Volkswagen offers three options:

  1. Owners can have their vehicles repaired at no cost to comply with emission standards. Repairs will be protected by warranty.
  2. It is also possible to give back the TDI vehicle to Volkswagen. The owner will then receive the wholesale value of their vehicle as of December 18, 2015, according to the Canadian Black Book.
  3. The owner may decide to trade his or her vehicle to Volkswagen for another model. The trade value will then be calculated based on the market value at the time of the exchange. If this value is less than the wholesale amount as of December 18, 2015, according to the Canadian Black Book, the owner will receive the difference between the two amounts.

Here are the Vehicles that are Included in this Agreement

  • Audi A3 - 2010 to 2013, 2015
  • Volkswagen Beetle - 2013 to 2015
  • Volkswagen Jetta - 2009 to 2015
  • Volkswagen Jetta Wagon - 2009
  • Volkswagen Golf - 2010 to 2013, 2015
  • Volkswagen Golf Wagon - 2010 to 2014
  • Volkswagen Golf Sportwagon - 2015
  • Volkswagen Passat - 2012 to 2015
