Mercedes-Benz Showcases the World’s First All-Electric Truck

Published on August 04 2016

It would appear that Tesla is not the only automaker interested in electric semi-trucks.

It would appear that Tesla is not the only automaker interested in electric semi-trucks. Indeed, while the California automaker is planning an eventual eco-friendly truck, Mercedes-Benz has already unveiled one. It’s called the Urban eTruck concept, and it’s the first of its kind in the world.

Electric Semi Truck Highlights Mercedes-Benz’ Commitment to Eco-Friendly Vehicles

We do not know that much yet about the Urban eTruck concept, but we do know that it is capable of travelling up to 200 kilometers between charges all the while offering a load capacity of around 26 tons. That’s equivalent to most current diesel-powered semi-trucks.

It should be noted that despite its impressive hauling capabilities, the Urban eTruck, as its name implies, is intended to be used in a city environment. Indeed, the truck could either be used for collecting trash, or perhaps for local deliveries, but the idea is to have it operate within a short radius. Hence, the 200-kilometer range should be more than enough.

Powering the Urban eTruck concept are two electric motors powering each hub of the rear axle. Each engine offers 167 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, and thanks to pretty impressive gearing they send up to 8,100 lb-ft of torque to rear wheels.

While you may not be able to purchase an Urban eTruck just yet, contact us to come check out our lineup of new Mercedes-Benz vehicles today at Mercedes-Benz Ottawa!
