We certainly weren’t expecting Toyota to unveil a significantly refreshed Toyota Camry at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but that is exactly what the Japanese manufacturer decided to do. Just three years after the previous model came to market, Toyota decided that its popular midsize sedan needed an update.

We can understand Toyota’s thinking. After all, the midsize sedan segment is chalk full of quality models, and Toyota needed to stay up to date, regardless of the fact that Camry is among the most popular models in its class. Dubbed a sweeping redesign, the new Camry gets a significantly upgraded exterior, new features, better noise insulation and an improved interior.

Outside, the new Camry builds on the sporty lines introduced initially on the Toyota Corolla and RAV4. The look is much more refined and much more distinctive, two features that may have lacked a little bit on the previous Camry. LED running lamps make up a distinctive visual signature, just like the available LED auto-levelling lamps for low and high beams. The rear of the vehicle has also been significantly improved. Overall, it is easy to immediately spot the new Camry on the road.

Inside, the center console features large buttons that are easy to use on a regular basis. The seats remain quite comfortable and the interior remains spacious for four adults, with extra room in the middle for another passenger. There is a high-tech look to the interior of the Camry and plenty of storage areas. You can also opt for an integrated cellphone charging pad in the vehicle.

The 2015 Toyota Camry features almost 2,000 new parts which is about 1/3 of the entire vehicle’s inner mechanics. Compared to the previous model, Toyota says everything is new except the roof. Like the Corolla, the new Camry was also improved in the areas of responsiveness and sportiness. The idea is to allow Camry owners to have a little more fun behind the wheel. That said, none of that makes the Camry any less comfortable. We know simply have a better-balanced vehicle throughout and a car that can hold its own on winding road as well as in the city or on a rough road.

Under the hood, the new Camry offers three engines. Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 178 hp. You can also opt for a 3.5-liter V6 engine that offers quite a bit more power, or a hybrid engine that combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for better fuel efficiency.
